Welcome to another fall season! I hope that all of the parents, students and teachers in our military community are ready to happily settle back into the new school year. The beginning of this season gives me a chance to look back over the recent summer months. This was my second summer with the Calgary MFRC, and I have once again been in awe of all of our available family and children’s programs, annual community events and activities including a number of very successful fundraising events.
I had the honour of attending both the Breakfast on the Bridge Gala and our own Hearts of Courage event. These displayed the wonderful ways to see all the passionate event planning committees come together to provide unique and meaningful activities that also helped raise funds for our organization and promoted our organization. Seeing the Calgary community come together with our Military community was a good reminder of how many people out there actively support all of our military families. They are the “Heroes behind the Heroes”. These funds we raised will help support our Mental Health and Wellness programming throughout the entire year for members and veterans.
We held three separate weeks of summer Day Camps here in Calgary. These camps included different activities each day, meals, snacks, and transportation. Additionally, we sent 11 kids to Camp Maple Leaf in Ontario. It was great to see all these military children and tweens get to try out so many different activities and interact with other kids who also come from a military background. Thank you to all of the volunteers and staff members who helped make sure that these camps were a resounding success.
Have a great fall and I hope to meet more of our new military family members this month at the Strengthening Families BBQ at Heritage Park on the 16th of Sept. You can find out more information about this event and other great events that we have coming up in this newsletter.
