Welcome to the fall! I hope that all of the parents, students and teachers in our military family are happily settled back into the new school year. This time of year has given me a chance to look back over the summer months. This was my first summer with the Calgary MFRC, and I have been in awe of all of the programs, community events, activities and fundraising that has happened in such a short amount of time.
I have had the honour of attending Breakfast on the Bridge and Hearts of Courage. These two events were a wonderful way to see a passionate event planning committee come together to plan unique and meaningful events that also helped raise funds for our organization. Seeing the Calgary community come together with the military community was a good reminder of how many people support all of you – the military families. The heroes behind the heroes. The funds raised from these events will help support our Mental Health and Wellness programming throughout the entire year.
We held four weeks of summer day camps here in Calgary, which included three weeks of kids day camps and one week of teen day camps. And, for the first time we also offered one week of day camp in both Red Deer and Lethbridge. These camps included different activities each day, meals, snacks and transportation. It was great to see the military children and teens get to try out so many different activities and interact with other kids who also come from a military background. Thank you to all of the volunteers and staff members who helped make sure that these camps were a resounding success.
During all of this, we also found time to gather together all of our staff together for a full day program audit. This important process gave us a chance to look at all the programs, services and events that we offer the community and truly discuss what works best for our military community. We also had a chance to talk about new ideas and programs we are seeing in other areas that may best serve our members and their families.
Our challenge is to now ensure that these discussions are turned into concrete action. Together and united, I am more than confident that we will make it happen. I’d like to thank the staff for their dedicated work ethic and collaboration as we move forward.
Have a great fall. I hope to meet more of our new military family members this month at the Welcome Breakfast, and hope to see you there. You can find out more information about the breakfast in this newsletter.
